When you drive your baby home, are you going to carry her in your arms in the car or put her in a car seat?

The logical thing to do might be to strap yourself with the seat belt and hold onto your baby tightly.

Why use infant car seats

Baby might be safer in your arms but in reality, should an accident happen and glass flies towards your face, your arms would fly to cover your face as a reflex action, letting go of baby. The baby may hit against something in the car or even worse, be thrown out of the car, crashing through a window.

On the other hand, if baby is strapped firmly in an infant car seat, the straps would hold baby safely to the car seat. If the seat is installed in the car according to the instructions, the seat with the baby will be secure in the car and much safer from the accident than if baby were in your arms.

Another reason why everyone should wear seatbelts and all babies and kids should be in car seats is this: Should an accident happen, an unsecured grown up could fall on a child, killing the child on impact due to the grown ups weight. It happened to my uncle when he was little. He never had a chance to even enter his teens.

Recently, my son was caught in an accident. Thankfully, he had his seatbelt on and escaped with a bruise on his face from the backlash as he hit the seat. It could have been far worse if not for the seatbelt.

My experience with infant car seats

Baby car seats protect your baby in the car. For my kids, when they were babies,

I secured them rear-facing infant car seats whenever they were in a car.I insisted that the grandparents too used car seats. They were more used to carrying the baby close to the body and felt that car seats were unneccesary.
